Have a look here and if you wanted to run a story, I'm sure he'd be happy to talk.

He only said that they had talked about it and decided against doing an interview. I didn't press him for a reason.

I just got off the phone with Mike. I called to ask about getting a copy of the last issue (my sub. ran out before I got it) and we talked for probably 30 min. (when I apologized for taking up so much of his time he said "that's OK, I have a lot more time now" )

He answered all of the questions that I had and I totally understand why they are "suspending publication". I did take the opportunity to personally thank him for his contribution to the sport for over 30 years and expressed to him how much we are gonna miss the magazine.

Jerry Baumchen posted this excerpt from an e-mail he received from Mike on dz.com and it is basically what he told me on the phone today in a nutshell.

Here is an excerpt from an email that I got from Mike:

"We've suspended the magazine because two key staffers have elected to move on to bigger and better things. Rather than recruit, hire and train replacements, I elected to take this option. The magazine has been financially sound since the early 1980s; in fact, 2008 was an exceptionally good year for it.

I'm not certain what the future holds for the magazine. Rather than leave our faithful subscribers hanging, we refunded the balances of their subscription payments. If the magazine should resume publication, we'd contact all former subscribers and invite them to re-subscribe.

Again, we've certainly enjoy publishing Skydiving, and it's gratifying to now receive the good wishes from so many subscribers and advertisers.

I'm sure you and I will cross paths again, Jerry; I'm not going anywhere!"

Hope this answers some questions for everyone else.

Blue Skies,

Jason

Maybe we'll get lucky and he'll be researching his next jump and will stumble upon this website.

Skydiving and the Economy

I think it would be great to have a series of shows that focus on the Economy of Skydiving, where we can hear a variety of guests discuss both why they feel there are so many dropzones and other skydiving related business closing, as well as what we can do (and what is being done) to help the industry grow no matter what is thrown our way.

Many great guest potentials have already been suggested here. Skydiving Magazine, Cal City Skydiving, and Carolina Sky Sports have all made it into the forums as requests.

What about some guests who are not directly in the news today because of economical reasons, but instead have helped our sport become what it is today, many of these suggestions have been on the show before, but what about bringing them on specifically to talk about economics and how it's effecting them?

Some ideas:

Bill Booth from <strike>Relative Workshop </strike>United Parachute Technologies

Ted Strong from Strong Enterprises.

A representative of the USPA

Sangiro, founder of Dropzone.com

Bill Kitchen, the founder and designer of the first SkyVenture wind tunnel - or perhaps current operational overseers.

Perhaps this would be a good subject to ask listeners to leave Voice Mails about their own opinions of why we are where we are today and where we are going?

-Matt Christenson

few ideas...

bunge wrote

a show on jump pilots (hell we need those guys and ladies) see what funny/horror stories they have from in the plane and dealing with ATC and other GA pilots

Check out show #55 with Chris Schindler of www.diverdriver.com. There may be a future episode on this topic as well.

maybe the aircraft manufactures, Cessna, Dehaviland, Pac, Shorts skyvan. how they feel about what we do to the planes to make them work for skydiving

Interesting idea.

interviews with some of the DZ owners who have called it quits. get there side (the Fayards from Carolina sky sports, the owners of Cal city)

Also interesting.

follow ups to some of the old stories like jump for the cause and strato quest...

For those of you who have not already heard these topics, Stratoquest was on show #26 and Jump for the Cause was on show #10. As for doing follow ups, this is something we would be interested in doing the next time these events are moving forward.

thats all for now......
